PHYSICAL. For a hybrid, Willow is decidedly plain in appearance. The only way in which her fox genes seemed to have had an influence is in her size. The size and weight of a small border collie (before they all died off in the original outbreak), the lass otherwise has the appearance of a perfectly normal wolf.
The miniature frame is a slight one, perpetually underfed as the stress of internal conflict eats away at what energy reserves she does have, the child is little more than skin and bone, loosely held together by an odd mix of determination and blissful ignorance. A snowy coat does its best to hide the poor condition of the young woman’s body, and does go some way to doing so, should one choose not to take a second glance. The white is not a perfect shade – strands of cream and light grey lace the canvas, scattered haphazardly in no particular arrangement.
Surprisingly, given her life thus far, the small body is remarkably clear of scars. Certainly the girl has suffered enough injuries which should have caused them. One could only conclude that the young healer’s powers worked their magic on her as she rested. She has indeed presented healing powers from a very young age, though has kept them hidden as best she can.
PERSONALITY
Personality makes more sense if history is read first.
Willow has DID (dissassociative identity disorder):
“Dissociative identity disorder is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct or split identities or personality states that continually have power over the person's behaviour. With dissociative identity disorder, there's also an inability to recall key personal information that is too far-reaching to be explained as mere forgetfulness. With dissociative identity disorder, there are also highly distinct memory variations, which fluctuate with the person's split personality. The "alters" or different identities have their own age, sex, or race. Each has his or her own postures, gestures, and distinct way of talking.”
Willow can be considered the core personality. Without her alters, she is everything about her original, whole being that was pure and innocent and hopeful. Protected from the worst of her childhood, she is aware of having been taken from her family but isn’t aware that they were slaughtered. She remembers long periods of being ignored, and being confused as to why they had bothered to kidnap her if she was to be of no use to them. She recalls a sense of companionship and kinship with the male she was kept with and is now confused as to how she came to be free. She is beginning to grow truly concerned about her blackouts, as she is losing greater and greater chunks of time, and is beginning to seriously question what happens when she is unaware. Aside from this, she is kind and gentle with others. Soft and sweet, she knows affection, but love is alien to her. Despite her two years on this Earth, she remains childlike in many ways.
Girl, when out, can boast of very little in terms of personality. She is truly insane by this point, only ever having known pain at the paw, hoof or claw of another creature. She sobs, begs and whimpers for mercy whenever out, and given the opportunity will scrabble away to hide in a small, dark space and cry. The most infantile of the alters, Girl cannot comprehend kindness, as she has never been exposed to it.
Sorrell is the alter born from Willow’s need to find love in a desperate situation. She speaks extremely rarely, carries herself carefully and gracefully and follows instructions flawlessly. All she wants is to please others in the hopes that doing so will make them love her, or at least look on her with a little less displeasure. She hold Willow’s ability to love, and if Willow were ever to start to feel love for someone, Sorrell would be forced out to handle the emotion.
Alder was created from Willow’s sense of injustice at her own treatment. He is the only one of her current personalities that presents as male. This is because growing up, Willow saw anger mainly from the males around her. Most of the sect was male, and so she came to associate this emotion with masculinity. Alder has the most guiding influence of all the alters, and watches over the others. He keeps an eye on things and makes sure that should a situation be too much for Willow, the appropriate alter is pushed out. Alder himself tends to come out during confrontations in which Willow needs to defend herself – he is much more competent when it comes to fighting than she is.
The girl’s final alter at this point is named Maca, and was the result of rape by an almost-friend driven mad by torture. Unable to cope with the violation, Willow retreated and Maca was born. Maca is an isolated version of all of Willow’s indulgence and potential sexuality. She is very much a separate entity to Sorrell, interested only in carnal pleasures and does not comprehend love.
Willow herself is essentially “the rest” left behind without her alters. She is currently unaware of their existence and has no idea that she is missing massive chunks of herself. She is aware that she suffers from blackouts and is growing concerned as to what happens during them.
HISTORY
Willow was born the only surviving pup to an infected mother. Their pack was a small one, and though their numbers were few and times were tough, the child was well provided for, for the first few months of her life. This changed when a purist sect tracked down the small group. As the only member of their number not visibly obviously infected, Willow was forced the watch as her family were slaughtered. Had the group not lusted for more information on the location of other infected creatures, her life would have been ended too on that day. As it transpired, she was in for a much worse fate. For 3 continuous days they tortured the child in an attempt to extract information. By this point, even the most skeptical of their number had been convinced that the broken and bloody child knew nothing. At this point the abuse continued only for their entertainment.
The child endured as long as she could, but at some point in that blur of pain and uncompromising hurt, her mind fractured. Rather than giving in to insanity, Willow’s mind rejected the pain, fear and grief of the past few days, and fled to the back of her own mind. What was left was Girl. And thus, the first of Willow’s alters were born. Girl was truly insane, driven mad by pain and unending hurt. While Willow slept at the back of her consciousness, Girl took the punishment doled out by her tormentors. She cried, she begged, she pleaded and promised that she would be good. So good, if they would please just not hurt her again.
Girl begged so prettily that the sect agreed that she would be brought with them as slave and possible bargaining chip, should ever the need arise. So they allowed the cowering wretch to crawl away into her old den for a couple of days and begin to heal. They allowed her long enough so that she might be able to walk with them as they traveled, before driving her out again with nips and snarls, as they set off on their way.
The journey was a confusing one for Willow. She did not recall any events that took place while Girl was “out”, and experienced these times as confusing blackouts or jumps in time. When ignored for any decent length of time, Girl would fade back and Willow would wake, blinking around at the group in bafflement. The second it looked that one of the purists might be angry or displeased with her, Girl would push forwards and take over, cowering and begging forgiveness.
Eventually the journey came to an end, and they returned to the Sect’s homeland. Here, Willow was put to work. Kind words became a thing only of memory, and though the child did everything she could to please her captors, she struggled with the tasks they gave her. As she grew and developed finer motor skills, she noticed that although she never received praise and the others never seemed pleased with her, their displeasure was notably softened when she completed a task perfectly. Rather than biting hatred, she would instead be scowled at with only mild disgust. Deprived of any other form of positive feedback, Willow felt a strange sense of pride at these reactions, understanding that her actions had caused them. She was doing something right.
Even as she found some small joy in these achievements though, Willow felt disgusted with herself. How could she be so happy with their reactions? There was still hatred there; that never went away, it just muted slightly. The internal conflict was enough to cause further damage to the fragile mind, and Willow’s personality split for a second time as her second alter was born. Sorrell stepped forward to complete menial tasks, perfectly attentive and compliant, desperate to please. In a very real way, Sorrell felt love for her captors. She had been so young when she was taken that these creatures were her family now. She loved them, and wanted nothing more than to make them happy.
At around seven months of age, Willow began to watch members of the sect more carefully. She watched, and she noticed. She noticed how their children were treated – with love and compassion and with a gentle touch. She noticed how differently she and her fellow prisoners were treated, and she felt true anger. It rose like a wave, rolling and churning until she felt fit to burst. It was only the knowledge that striking out would mean certain death that allowed the child to retreat once more into herself, this time birthing Alder. Alder was Willows third alter, carrying all of her anger, bravery and her sense of self preservation. While Willow was not aware of her alters, her alters were most certainly aware of her. Alder took on the role of watching over Willow and the other Alters – making sure that should the young wolf need one of them, she was pulled back in time and the other personality sent out to deal with the situation.
While there were not many other prisoners kept by this particular purist sect, they did keep a two year old infected male for a short while. During his time there, Willow grew close to him, bonding somewhat over their shared incarceration. One particularly bad day, two large wolves came and took the prisoner away. He was gone for days, and when he was returned, his own mind was undeniably damaged. Tortured past the point of breaking, his mind had not fractured in the peculiar way that Willows seemed prone to do, and instead had simply broken. Exhausted from the pain and punishment, the man gravitated towards Willow – she had been kind to him, and he saw her as a light in the hellish darkness at this point.
Seeking comfort over the next few days, the male pushed himself closer and closer to Willow. This culminated in sex, and though Willow was horrified and uncomfortable with it, she didn’t understand what was happening until it was too late, and by that point her protests and pleas fell on deaf ears. The man was too trapped in his own mind to understand. Unable to deal with the new violation, Willow retreated once more, and so Maca stepped forwards – the alter to take on the potential of Willow’s sensuality, indulgence and sex drive.
This continued for a while, until one day they were discovered. Disgusted, the sect beat the pair to within an inch of their lives, and threw them off their lands. Assuming they would bleed out, they left them there for the scavengers. Her skill of healing working its way through her body, Willow healed quickly, and Alder took over as soon as they came around, fleeing from the area and remaining in control until he determined that they were in as safe a place as they were likely to find. At this point he stepped back and Willow emerged, blinking and confused by her newfound freedom.
