Viktor Markovich
NICKNAME. Vik (though he dislikes it).
AGE. 3 years.
SPECIES. Feline [LRG].
BREED. Tiger.
GENDER. Male.
PURIST. No.
APPEARANCE
HEIGHT. 50".
WEIGHT. 514.
EYE COLOUR. Yellow/Green (#aaff5b)
PHYSICAL. A base of white blanketed by a red russet makes up his base coat, with thick fur wreathing a body accustomed to cold climates. Bands of obsidian streak down the brilliant burnt orange, fading as they reach into the ivory undercarriage. Eyes of rich yellow-green peer past delicate white whiskers. The build of this beast is nothing to sneeze at, for the male dons a suit made of nothing but muscle. His measurements are equaled in his paws, leaving behind him a trail of immense prints in earth that yields under his weight. Accompanying his grand size is a slowness as such a mass is forced into motion. A handsome, squared face sits atop his sturdy frame, ears erect and posture impeccable. Bass vibrations erupt from his maw in a booming voice, but his whispers are as sleek as silk over granite. His first language, Russian, leaves his English coated in a thick accent. His natural musk is akin to the smell of the forest after a gentle rain.
PERSONALITY
Despite the formidable shadow he may cast, this giant is as gentle as they come. A pacifist at heart, he ends up acting as the arbitrator in most situations. Observant with a strong sense of morals, this would make a fine career for the lumbering beast. Although he tries to be fair in all situations, most of his thoughts are judgmental and harsh. He's come to understand that not everything that passes through his mind needs to be said, and so a great deal of his time is spent in silence, weeding through his thoughts to determine what should and should not be said.
Patient and willing to listen to everyone who has a story to tell, interactions with Viktor consist mainly of him gaining information. From tales of a troubled youth to the legend of the so-and-so kingdom, he'll sit through anything to quench his need for social interaction while giving as little information about himself as possible. Questions any more personal than his name will be ignored or changed to a different subject.
Viktor does not have a good heat tolerance. Originating in a frozen wasteland, he is convinced that the heat of the sun will surely kill him one day. Second only to excessive heat is sand in his fur. Oh, how the desert repels him. He will avoid deserts unless absolutely necessary and grow impatient and unbearably cranky when he finds that he can't cool down.
He finds nothing more peaceful and soothing than the rain. Whether it be a light sprinkle or a thunderous downpour, he likes to feel the water run down his pelt, the smell of the earth as it soaks up the moisture, and the sound of everything getting tuned out by the static. Rain was unheard of in the land he originated in. Rain turned to snow or hail, drifting down silently or beating down so hard that one would be forced to run for cover or be potentially injured by the small balls of ice.
HISTORY
The Markovichs
Two travelers, a tiger named Nikolay and a tigress named Lenora, roamed lands far and wide in search of adventure. Married at a young age by the arrangement of their parents, they found love, mystery, action, and riches in the most unlikely places. For years they were vagabonds, always together but never staying in once place for too long. When talk arose of bringing a litter of children into the world, they began to search for a permanent place to call home. Genetically thick coats steered them to live in a cold place where it never rained, but snowed, and water hid under shields of ice. They found a place where the ice glistened like crystal, the pine trees slept quietly under a blanket of snow, and abundant low-lying caves hid in plain sight.
The Korsikovs
Nikolay and Lenora took months to find the perfect cave to raise their young. The area was mostly free of predatory life, so less rivalry for food. Their only neighbors within a reasonable distance were a pair of tigers much like themselves: Nona and Pavel Korsikov. They, too, were just settling down before starting to broaden their own family. The two couples became fast friends. Trips would be taken to one another's cave to spend a few days or even weeks with each other. After just a few short months, they agreed that their children would wed if opposite genders were born to each pair. This was a common practice between the tiger families of this land, and everyone celebrated the decision.
Brothers Born
The Korsikovs spawned young before the Markovichs, Nona giving birth to a single daughter that they named Klara. Both families hoped for Lenora to bear males so that the families could be united in the marriage of their children. It was only a few months later that Lenora became pregnant. To everyone's relief, she gave birth to an all-male litter of triplets; the eldest, Ivan, the middle child, Viktor, and the youngest, Anton. All brothers looked nearly identical to one another, with bright orange pelts contrasting the white underbelly and jet black stripes. The most noticeable visible difference (other than scent) between them was eye color. Ivan had gold like the rays of the sun, Viktor's were a yellow-green, and Anton had a cold blue. They shared the bulky build, handsome square heads, width of the stripes that ran their body, and even their posture was similar. Ivan was passionate, fearless, and sometimes short-tempered. He was, from the very beginning, more independent than his siblings. Viktor was Ivan's opposite: logical, cautious, and more patient than all the other family members combined. Viktor and Ivan saw the world in two very different colors, which was a cause for tension between the two. Anton, the youngest, was closer to Viktor than anyone else in the Markovich line. Anton was above all else a genius in every category except socializing. With this Viktor aided his little brother in understanding why people did the things they did.
The Engagement
As discussed, Klara was to be engaged to one of the brothers. Nona and Pavel chose the middle child, Viktor, for his politeness. After both litters were old enough to travel, the two families found a larger cave that could house their growing numbers. The four cubs grew up together under the careful supervision of the adults. They made sure to give Viktor and Klara plenty of bonding time after revealing that they were destined to be wed at the age of 3. The newly-engaged cubs went with the decision without argument. It was tradition, after all.
The Change
Months turning into years, and the wedding was drawing closer. Viktor and Klara had not had any problems, knowing from a young age what was expected of them. At two and a half years solid plans for the wedding were starting to take place. Things were going smoothly until Viktor noticed a change in Klara. Where they once took long walks through the pine forest, she instead opted to go alone. Where they once sat for long talks she chose to bring other family members into the conversation, avoiding alone time with Viktor at every opportunity. Accompanying this new distance was a new attitude. A once calm and open face turned to an agitated, secretive one. There was only the two families in the frozen wasteland they called home, and the cubs had grown up together. What secrets could she possibly bear? Everything soon became clear.
The Garden
On another one of her solo walks, Viktor had had enough. Filled with worry and assuming the worst, he followed her in secret. Although he had assumed the worst, he was not prepared for what he found. Far into the forest, much farther than they would need to go to hunt, Klara had a garden of barely-living plants attempting to sprout despite the snow and cold. Inside this garden was a plant his mother had warned him about as an adolescent called Pennyroyal. Viktor observed Klara taking the smallest of bites from one of the plants and chewing it for an extended period of time before spitting out the shredded remains and beginning the slow walk back home. Pennyroyal was a plant his mother had warned him of because it was used to abort an unwanted litter. The only reason Lenora had even brought up this dangerous plant was to make sure he never ate any by accident. So Klara's secret was that she was pregnant--and trying not to be. A heartbroken Viktor took a long walk.
The Betrayal
Viktor was not upset that Klara was trying to stop herself from having a bastard litter out of wedlock. Such shame that would be placed on her was understandable that she would want to avoid. The issue was that Viktor had not been the one to plant the seed within the unwed female. There were no other males within an incredible distance that he was not related to. The obvious suspect was Ivan. The brothers never had had a good relationship, and this could have been a way for Ivan to get even with Viktor for not being chosen by the Korsikov parents. Viktor would, however, ask Klara directly. He pondered for the rest of the day and decided to go about it tactfully. Taking Klara away from the family den the following day, he confronted her about what he saw. Klara did not argue, caught in her deception and no way to reason out of it. One of the things he loved about her was the way she would get right to the point. When he asked if the father was Ivan, the answer surprised him. Ivan had no idea what was going on. No, the father of the cubs was Anton. Viktor's closest friend. The one he trusted most in the world. The brother who needed him the most. It was a betrayal that stung more than any other.
The End
Klara conceded to him that she was far enough along in her pregnancy that if the Pennyroyal had not yet worked it most likely meant that the cub would be born but may have deficiencies because of her actions. Still, she continued to eat the plant in hopes that her young would be a premature stillborn. After learning the truth, Viktor told his parents that the wedding was off. This was a severe break in tradition, as the groom nor the bride had a say in their fate if the parents deem the wedding on. The parents would not officially call off the wedding and a loyal, lovestruck Viktor could not bear to tell his parents of what Anton had done. A distraught Viktor did not know what to do. He waited in isolation for weeks leading into months, the wedding drawing dangerously close. It was only a month before the wedding that the Pennyroyal showed results. Klara gave birth to a single cub with the coat the color of snow. He had his mother's dainty frame but Anton's cold blue eyes. For an unfathomable reason, Viktor gazed upon the cub and felt an inexplicable love toward it. The cub was a male, and he was alive. Although just barely. Klara named him Aloysius. Klara then came clean to the family but was shamed for her infidelity. Viktor was not shamed for the indiscretions of his fiance, but was unsure if he could live with the jealous love he felt for the weak cub Aloysius and the burning anger for his brother Anton. Without a word, Viktor slipped into the night to get away from it all. To find a new home. A place where no one knew him. No one could hurt him again. By the standards of tradition, he is technically still considered to be engaged to Klara because the wedding was not officially called off. Still, he has no plans to see any of them again unless he was given the chance to raise Aloysius. Something about the cub still clings to him, but he cannot forgive the others for the events leading up to Aloysius' birth.
