PHYSICAL. Cayo is a red fox by blood, but he doesn't closely resemble the average fox of his species, as his coat is more black and gray than russet. For this reason, it's accurate to say that he's a cross fox (which is still within the red fox species as it's merely a pelt variation), although even then he doesn't sport as much black as a lot of other cross foxes. His fur is mostly brown-ish orange, with prominent streaks of black, gray, and silver ticking his pelt between the back of his head and his shoulders. His long and thin legs are pitch black from toes to elbow, although his hind legs start to transition into pale brown and silver fur at his ankles. Like all red foxes, he has white fur under his chin and down his throat. Most notably about him (and what makes him easy-ish to recognize) is his gray-and-black hindquarters and the silver-gray mask-like marking covering his face. The light silver hairs that tick his lower back almost resemble spots, and the mixed black and light gray coloration on his bushy white-tipped tail resembles a mottled kind of pattern.
Cayo has thick fur, and it helps keep him well-insulated in the cold. It becomes a curse, though, during the summer months when the days are long and scorching hot, as his heavy coat makes him overheat like crazy (which turns him into an insufferable grump, but that's beside the point). He has intelligent and soft-looking dark blue eyes, and they're framed by black and red markings. To most other foxes, Cayo is considered to be a rather handsome fellow, although some would argue that he's getting on a little too much in age to still be attractive to the ladies, as most foxes only live to be about five in the wild. Regardless, Cayo feels as youthful as ever; he walks with a confident stride, and he feels like he can keep on going strong for more than a couple good years. And he's probably right, so long as he's able to stay out of the jaws of a wolf, coyote, or mountain lion.
PERSONALITY
Cayo has a dangerous amount of self-confidence, as he rarely succumbs to (or even so much as experiences) self-doubt. Others have criticized him in the past for this, accusing him of being reckless, suicidal, an idiot, or even worse, a recklessly suicidal idiot. Nonetheless, even though he actually is relatively smart (and one would have to be in order to be the smooth-talker that he is), he could still benefit from listening to some of the criticism, at least, as he is irrefutably guilty of doing some stupid, criticism-worthy things. He's spontaneous and curious, and if he sees something that interests him, he has to go check it out (even if everyone else around him advises against it). In response, Cayo always insists that he's got a handle on the situation, even when it's obvious to most that he most certainly does not. Due to this inflated perception of himself as being cunning and sneaky enough to untangle himself out of pretty much anything, he tends to be rather fearless when some fear would honestly be healthier.
Cayo's spirit is wild enough that he's unfortunately quite impossible to pin down, and as a consequence, he really can't be trusted to uphold promises or keep up with responsibilities. He's an independent fellow, and while he isn't apathetic toward others, he's definitely sort of cynical when it comes to most matters of the heart, and that tends to color his interactions. Regardless, he's pretty easy-going and benign in his own way. And despite what some might say, he isn't malicious. However, true to stereotype, he's fairly good at lying (or telling white lies, as he'll say). He does it without remorse, too, if it means he either gets a laugh out of it or some other kind of benefit (like in those life-threatening situations where he has to either play a trick or get eaten, for example). Again, though, Cayo isn't necessarily selfish or completely unconcerned with others, as he does have a moral compass that tells him not to lie, cheat, or steal from others who don't deserve it. He just has this laissez-faire kind of attitude about the world that makes him seem shadier than he really is sometimes.
HISTORY
Cayo had a mate once, but there was never much love between them, even though they stayed together for several seasons. Lisbeth (or, as Cayo liked to call her in order to piss her off, Lis) was arrogant and extremely hard to please. She tried her damnedest to break Cayo of his free spirit, never humoring his penchant for adventuring and living life spontaneously, often shooting down his suggestions and insulting him over almost everything he did. As one could imagine, the two frustrated each other immensely, but it wasn't exactly the worst match in the world; while Lis definitely did have a massive stick lodged up her ass, she was able to keep Cayo from constantly endangering himself, and Cayo gave her the security of a territory and den within which she could fuss about everything under the sun.
It was in preparation for a potential litter of kits that could come in the near future, as Lisbeth had been eager to become a mother at the time. Cayo had personally been extremely reluctant to grant her that kind of wish, as he thought neither of them were well-suited enough for parenthood, but he had kept his mouth shut regardless, knowing better than to argue with a stubborn vixen who had massive kit fever.
Before the two could take their first steps, though, Cayo had managed to slip Lisbeth's coils for long enough to do what he did best, which was get into trouble. While hunting one cool autumn evening, Cayo had wandered off on his own to a gently sloping meadow that was wide open to the vast cloudless sky. The tips of the grass blades were tall enough to gently graze his shoulders as he moved, concealing him from any other creatures that might have been lurking in the area. The scent of rabbit had been teasing him for miles, and he knew that he was close to being where he needed to be in order to pounce. He had been lost in serious concentration, which was probably how he was able to get completely caught off-guard by a threat that had been watching him from above. The curved talons of a hawk tried to sink into his ruff, and the strength of the bird's momentum sent him tumbling sideways. Cayo had cursed, disbelieving. He knew that birds would brazenly pick up kits if they could, but he was a grown-ass fox.
Where the hawk had tried to grab him smarted like a wasp sting, and it made Cayo pretty pissed off. If Lisbeth had been there, she would have made him flee for the cover of the woods, but since she wasn't, there was no-one there to tell him not to react rashly. Cayo snapped at the hawk as it tried to attack him again, but the bird wouldn't let up. It flapped its mighty brown wings, and for a moment Cayo thought it was struggling, but that was before it lifted its talons up in an attempt to jab his damned eyes out. Due to its sheer size, it was able to push him to the ground. Cayo violently writhed, flashing his fangs and flailing his limbs. Perhaps because of the huge fight he was putting up, the hawk lurched backward, allowing Cayo the heartbeat he needed to rise back onto his four paws.
Again, Lisbeth would have yelled at him to run, but without her, Cayo's mind was telling him that he had this totally under control. And hey, he had to have; he wasn't dead yet, and there was no way a dumb bird could actually carry him off as if he was just a minnow from a putrid stream.
Cayo barked a taunt, and he lunged with bared canines for the hawk's feathered neck. It managed to avoid his jaws before overpowering him once more with a swing of its talons, beginning yet another round of fighting between wily fox and fierce bird of prey.
In the end, Cayo had been right; there was no way that bird (or any bird, for that matter) was carrying him off. But that didn't mean he wasn't sporting his fair amount of injuries, as his back was sore and stinging from the countless blows the hawk had made with its claws and sharp beak. Nevertheless, Cayo had felt not only triumphant after finally escaping from that damned bird, but wonderfully alive, as well. He hadn't had this much adrenaline coursing through him since he was a yearling. He hadn't realized how much he'd missed courting with danger. Of course, Lisbeth was of a much different opinion. When he had returned food-less and covered in bleeding wounds, the vixen had become furious. Cayo attempted to diffuse the situation by dismissively explaining that he had had the whole thing under control the entire time, but that only succeeded in making Lisbeth even more livid.
Unsurprisingly, the vixen cursed him out, but in a twist that Cayo hadn't been expecting, she said she was leaving. Cayo had exasperatedly asked her what the hell she was talking about, thinking she was just going on another one of her over-dramatic tirades that would fizzle out once the day was done, but that wouldn't be the case. She told him more or less with these words that he 'wasn't worth the gray hairs', and with that, she was gone. She stormed away, and Cayo watched her leave, angry and confused. He had returned to the den and nursed his own wounds, all the while honestly believing that she would come running back by the next day. She didn't, though. She seriously never came back.
At first he had missed her, but he quickly realized how sweet freedom from the nagging vixen was. No longer feeling any kind of attachment to the land he had walked upon for many months, he began to wander, even taking on a travel partner or two in his journeys. He currently explores Toren, contentedly weaving his way in and out of various misadventures.
