Not even the thick layer of snow could extract this place from her memory. It was not the cave she had lived in prior to the onset of the disease, but its features were much the same. Stalagmites adorned the cavern's base, while stalactites sent drops of fresh, watery lime to the base of the cavern. Small pools formed between the formations, but she could not find a source more expansive than these slight puddles. Still- they were enough for a drink if necessary, despite the unusual taste. Some caves, like the one she previously called home, contained pristine pools with no contamination, kept pure by their isolation. These were born from calcium deposits; they were not the most pure. Compared to the pools of her last home, these would be repulsive to her delicate senses. She had been spoiled by the water, but the temperature here was the same as her old home. No matter the external temperature, the cave was consistently the same temperature, a reprieve from the summer's heat or winter's cold. It had been a place of refuge before, and it was here that she would find refuge again.
The was a howling noise at the mouth of the cave. It came not from a creature but from the brutal winter winds that swept past the opening. A few flakes from the blizzard drifted gently to the ground once inside the shelter of the cave, leaving a faint carpet at the mouth that welcomed any weary guests. The afternoon sun struggled to part its way through the thick clouds, and only a few rays made it past the threshold of the cave's entrance. The rest of the cave was almost entirely pitch black. Persephone took shelter in a small alcove to the right of the mouth, far enough from the cold that it could not freeze her to the core. The room was still chilly, enough to raise the hairs on thick winter coat.
It was, in all, a most unflattering time of the year for her. She was a child of the spring, reared to enjoy the warm weather. Flora and fauna inspired her imagination and passions most, and this season could provide little stimulation. She had been perusing various lands when the storm had come upon her. Without a home to speak of in these new lands, she chose to rest in the nearest shelter she could find. The nostalgia behind this place, her salvation for the day, washed over her. The caves had once saved her life from being as mundane as her forefathers' lives, and now it saved her from the cold. Perhaps it could save another from the elements.

Massive paws tracking up the falling snow that gently cooled the pads beneath his toes. The winds uplifting his thickening coal looking coat as the seasons were in change, gave him an almost fluffy characteristic to the tall brute. Reality showed upon him though if you took a closer glance at him; ribs protruding from his sides and a slightly tired look in his handsome eyes. Life was and had been quite chaotic for such a young animal. A true characteristic about him that would always define him as Chaos.
His maw raised to the swirling winds, his ears swiveled searching for anything to take some cover in... or maybe some company maybe? No, Chaos wasn't the type to interact with many and how could he be? His recent past had shaped him and his insane antics often sent any potential companions off at a sprint.
Finally into his vision appeared the shapes of hope...caves. The half domes crooned to the lanky brute as he increased his pace towards the caverns. The vicious gusts of wind attempted to off balance him as he moved with much more speed, but agility was a strong point of the insane. Hesitation was out of the question in Chaos' thoughts; to hesitate is to show weakness or lack of confidence and who would want to show themselves as a coward? Nope, there wasn't not a recollection of hesitation before, and there wouldn't be one any time in the future in his mind.
The wind grew milder as he moved into the beginnings of the caverns. He could disappear in the depths being such a dark hue in his coat, but his orbs seemed to light up in the darkening terrain. Them being such a soft green, the illuminated and often drew others in towards him. This would suffice a rouge for the time being. There wasn't a reason to endure the harsh weather, and who knows maybe he could find peace ... or even happiness from whatever was amongst the caverns. After all, he hadn't seen anyone else in out in the damn weather.
The chilly air delivered more than snow upon the earth. In its travels, it had grasped the scent of another, taking with it many different scents she had not encountered before. The smell seemed stronger to her with each passing moment, and the wind warned her of the arrival of another in this way. She had determined that this smell could not be from any ordinary equine, but she didn't know for certain from what beast it came. Perhaps it was deer seeking shelter from the storm, but most likely, it was a dog. They were some of the few species in this area that would not quiet down for a winter slumber, although she sometimes wished that her genetics would have coded for that behavior. In this weather, any creature still wandering the earth would take refuge in the caves, no matter how high the potential for danger. The harsh winter weather ensured certain death by frostbite, but the caves could be safe if traversed expertly. The things of nightmares lurked further in the caves, but Persephone knew better than to venture too deep without a companion who knew the lay of the caves. Hibernating bears and other fearsome creatures were not to be disturbed from the belly of the caves. It was safest to stay towards the entrance, for it was also the exit. Any that tried to attack her would not get between her and the exit, unless they came in that way.
Soon, the wind's promise of a companion was fulfilled. An canine of pure ebony with emerald eyes came sauntering in through the entrance, small flecks of snow clinging to his fur. He seemed to have not noticed her in the corner, and she continued to stand there, frozen as a statue. Entranced by his bright eyes, she merely observed him for a short time. In such a diminished state, the one that winter often brought, it was hard for her to find him threatening, but one could not be too careful in the presence of a predator. A canine could quickly become a foe if judged improperly. It was this mentality that disabled her from trusting a wolf completely. Still, he was the only company she could hope for at the present time, so she would risk her chances and speak to him. Slowly slipping out of the cover of shadow, she spoke. "Hello. Quite a brutal storm out there, isn't it? It's amazing how quickly winter has come upon us all." She stood away from him, giving him personal space enough to feel comfortable. Wolves were strong in packs, but they were quite vulnerable when alone. With any luck, there would be no unpleasant confrontation between the two. Both wanted a place to keep out of the storm, and both would eventually need companionship. It could be beneficial to them both.

Chaos turned to face his approached, his vivid eyes quickly dilating as he hadn't noticed the mare when he had entered the caves. His hostility dropped back down to a normal casual brute as the mare wasn't aggressive in any way. He noted the distance she kept from him as she stopped in her tracks several feet before him just out of the shadows. Horses were strange creatures in the mind of Chaos, but ones that could be easily tolerated if you didn't bare your fangs. Chaos had a thin smirk on his face when his thoughts passed through his mind before responding to the mare now before him. She could be a companion for now, but he imagined if she attempted to get to know him she wouldn't like him.... just like everyone else.
"It is pretty chilly out there" He chuckled as his eyes shifted to the bright snow encrusted entrance of the cave. The snow swirled about the entrance dragging into the caves the frigid wind and flecks of the frozen liquid. His orbs returned to the mare, they glowed in the low light of the caverns against his ebony pelt. He remained standing as he looked upon the mare, though he wasn't the type to be hostile unless seriously provoked. Chaos was a naturally happy brute and it would take a lot to be hostile to a wolf let alone a horse.
"Are you from around here normally? I'm kind of a wanderer myself" Chaos chuckled in a relaxed tone. Obviously this mare was being respectful of him so why not be respectful to her? She hadn't done anything wrong and after all she had been in the caverns before his arrival. Testing her wasn't really in his agenda at the moment, and maybe she could be compatible with his crazy life style? Who knows, maybe they could even be friends... though that was far down the list for Chaos. Friends weren't a priority and he didn't want others in his life if they didn't want to be there.
Distance seemed to be the key to enduring interactions with wolves. Proper spacing could make the difference between living to see the sun rise at the start of another day or expiring with a final breath. Their jaws were so powerful and their teeth so sharp that one wrong move could come with quite a cost. Fortunately, there was only the lone brute, and Persephone knew that a wolf alone was hardly a challenge to fend off. Packs of wolves, with their eyes shining in anticipation of the kill, were the true terrors. They had strength in numbers, but a lone wolf was hardly worth considering. He was no threat.
As soon as he entered the cave, he became less hostile, apparently realizing that Persephone meant no harm. It was a lonely, snowy afternoon, and Seph merely wanted companionship in the bitter cold. He seemed to want the same thing, and thus a conversation began. "Yes, it's absolutely freezing. We're lucky we found this cave, really." Seph was not fond of the white ice that blanketed the earth. All scenery was wiped out, causing everything to blend together. The snow insulated the world, and without the wind, it would soak up all the sounds of the earth entirely. Wandering through the snowy canvas without the wind was maddeningly silent. She could imagine that many a poor soul could lose rationality in the wilderness without the sounds of other creatures. To feel completely and utterly alone was terrifying. But now, Seph had the brute and the wind to keep her company. Perhaps it was not the company she would have liked most, but it was better than to go without.
"No, I'm not from here. I came after the disease broke out, but I've been wandering ever since I came here, which has been about three seasons or so." It had been a long three seasons, with relatively few relations to speak of. Really there had only been Luthor, of whom she had been so fond, but she had not seen him for many a moon. Equines had a way of walking into and out of her life. Perhaps canine companionship would prove less fleeting. A slight smile lit her features as she spoke. "It's too bad you had to arrive now of all times. Usually these lands are much more hospitable than this." A puff of snow blew into the cavern, and a shower of ice crystals rained to the floor. With this weather, Seph figured she would be here for a while, so she decided to introduce herself. "My name is Persphone, or Seph for short. You are?"

The gusts of wind lifted his soft ebony fur causing him to shake for a moment in discomfort. Moving off a few steps in towards the mare, Chaos was out of reach of the chilling wind. "Persephone huh? Well I'm Chaos, and so far it is my pleasure.." Chaos spoke with a light smirk as he sat down on his haunches. Lifting his hind foot, he scratched at his right ear casually. Persephone looked to be judging him slightly, based on his fatigued appearance. His exposed ribs stood out much less as he remained in a sitting position. He really could care less even if she found him little of a threat or not; after all he wasn't really in the idea to be a hostile brute. It was much better to be himself and with all the craziness that came with, he would either grow on this mare of push her away.
His eyes seemed to glow in the darkness as he looked to the mare now from the darker side of the cave. These eyes were emotionless, and practically unreadable. The eyes are normally the viewpoints into the soul right? Well maybe no one had ever looked close enough into Chaos' eyes to crack the brute's mind and emotions. Gazing behind him for a moment into the blackness of the cave, Chaos returned his face to Persephone. "I'm sure the area looks much better without the snow; plus I'm sure I wouldn't look so 'weak' as well." Chaos chuckled when he mentioned his physical state. Yes he was much thinner currently than he was naturally, but with travel comes little time to hunt and the weather hadn't helped.
Anyway what was this mare's story? Why was she so alone? Chaos was puzzled by the lack of companion, specifically another equine to Persephone. Lone horses more often than not were on the verge of death or the rebellious loners that thought they were safe to wander away from the main herd. She looked to be friendly and very far from rebellious or conceded. Though many though Chaos was as psycho, but ... maybe he really was psycho.. or merely just understood by everyone. Abandoning his thoughts to speak again Chaos peered up at the mare with is entrancing emerald orbs. So what's your story?"

Her light eyes followed him as he sat on his haunches and scratched inelegantly behind his ears. Her head crooked to the side in interest as he lifted his hind leg to scratch, and she watched him intently as he did. Some behaviors translated between the two species, but she could see that this was one that did not. At least, she had never attempted such a feat. After some time, her gaze locked on his eyes as he spoke. The brow of one eye shifted upward almost imperceptibly as she formulated a retort that would never leave her mind. So far? Well hopefully for a prolonged period of time. I don't want any trouble... Fortunately, he didn't seem to want trouble, either. Maybe this encounter could be somewhat pleasant, after all.
She noticed now how bright his irises were. Compared to the darkness of the cave, they seemed almost to fluoresce, illuminating all that his gaze fell upon. There was nothing to see beyond the colors, she feared. They were an unreadable script to her, though surely there was more behind them. He spoke again, this time giving a slight chuckle. Following suit, Persephone let a light laugh escape. He understood sarcasm well enough; they would surely get along. "Well, the weather hasn't been kind to anyone around here. If everyone's weaker than you, then you're still strong. It's all relative." She was trying to encourage him; the winter had obviously been difficult on the brute. Fortunately for him, the winter had been just as bad if not worse for everyone else.
"My story?" She paused for a moment, considering her response. Nothing had happened since she came here, unfortunately. She wished there had been more excitement for her to report, but there was none. "The quick and dirty of it is that I had to leave the things I loved behind. Someone close to me became very sick- but the mental kind of sick. I had to leave him behind, but now I don't know why I did it." A sorrowful smile lit her features as her eyes clouded over, taking on a look of introspection she'd rarely worn before. "Sometimes, I wonder if I would've been happier running around with a loon that loved me. I can't imagine it would be worse than this infernal solitude." Images of the past flew through her mind like ghosts back to haunt the living. She could see him, eyes wild, begging her to come with him. She said no. Suddenly, she returned back to the conversation and out of the dark place she'd just visited."So... what's your story, then?
